Understanding Anxiety And Depression

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Today we live in a world filled with stress and deadlines. It seems that the more we evolve with technology and ways to produce things more quickly, the more stress increases. This is an enigma. You would think that worries and workloads word decrease with our consistent advancement. However, anxiety and depression seem worse now than they ever were. I guess it’s possible that in the past, people simply didn’t mention it. Well they certainly make an issue of it these days. In fact, if you’ve ever spent an afternoon in front of the TV, I’m sure you’ve witnessed some sort of ad for a medicine, which helps alleviate anxiety and depression.

More and more humans are admitting to their problems in this modern world of solutions. Whether it be sleep related or fear of public places, scientists are always coming up with new ways to fix it. Anxiety and depression are certainly at the top of this long list. When I ponder the notion of depression, I think of someone who has recently lost a loved one or someone who is handicapped is such a way that prevents them from living a normal life. Well this is definitely a misconception. Many people are weighed down by the burden of anxiety and depression for other reasons. Some of which are not even known. You may wonder if it concerns the food we eat. For some reason or another, people seem to have problems with staying content.

A topic that concerns me, is teenagers. Anxiety and depression seems to be striking them more than anyone these days. Granted, being a teen is rough in some aspects, and incredibly easy in others. While some teens may argue that it’s horrible, I was a teen myself not long ago. We all know what it’s like. However, I can never recall being depressed. This makes me wonder what has changed in the last ten years. Depression should not be a part of childhood. In fact, anxiety and depression should be much less prevalent than it is altogether.

If you punch in the word, depression, on the Internet, you will come up with an abundance of drugs and programs, which offer relief. While we clearly live in a society that focuses on the negative more that the positive, it’s a good thing we have treatments for anxiety and depression. However a pill will work in the immediate future, but overall we need to start understanding why we are getting depressed. We need to dig further than the superficial answers. See you on the next post.

Improve Your Vocabulary Starting Today

Friday, July 28th, 2006

There’s more than one way to improve your vocabulary. You don’t have to spend hours pouring over a dictionary. You don’t have to learn all sorts of fancy or unusual words like oneiromancy (divination by means of dreams), dollybird (a pretty young woman) and troposphere (a portion of the atmosphere below the stratosphere). You don’t have to return to college and major in English.

You can start by learning the distinction between common words that are often confused. A quick perusal through a nearby Borders or Barnes & Noble (or nearby independent bookstore) will reveal at least one, and probably several books that list pairs of commonly used words that are difficult to keep straight. There’ll contain all sorts of other useful English grammar and usage tips too that you can delve into after you mastered the words, pair by pair. There are also some books that are strictly about vocabulary improvement. They’ll contain most of the words that are easy to confuse and many more to enjoy after that.

So, let’s begin now with six examples that will help you decide if this is where you need to begin to improve your vocabulary.

Do you know the difference between alter and altar?

Alter is a verb, and it means to change. Altar is a noun, and it’s a place of worshop.

Which one of these is correct-all right or alright?

If you picked all right, you’re right. There is no such word as alright.

What about afterward and afterwards?

I may have tricked you here. Both words are correct.

Here’s a trio that confuses many: credulous, credible and creditable. What are their different meanings?

Credulous means ready to believe when the evidence is uncertain. Credible describes something that is worthy of acceptance. Creditable is a synonym for praiseworthy.

What about stationery and stationary? Which one means writing material?

If you said stationery, you’re correct. Stationary means fixed or not moving.

Okay, what about talisman and talesman? Which one has something to do with our judicial system?

Right again if you guessed talesman, who is a person summoned to make up the required number of jurors. A talisman is a charm.

Now, if you knew all of these already, you’re way beyond the beginner stage. You’ll need more advanced guidance to improve your vocabulary. Even the most advanced among us probably have to look up many a word in graduate-level college texts. That’s one method of vocabulary improvement, looking up words in difficult texts, but those words are not the sort that will trip you up in everyday communication. For that purpose, the grammar and vocabulary improvement guides at the local bookstore are a great place to begin.
See you on the next post.

Learning About Nutritional Values

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

How are your eating habits lately? This should be the concern of any human being. While animals and wildlife don’t have to worry about eating healthy, our species takes a more prudent approach. Then again we’re not killing fellow animals with our teeth and claws either. Okay, well at least I hope no one’s doing that. Anyway, the nutritional values of what we put into our bodies these days are crucial. There are just so many consequences and dilemmas at hand. From heart disease, to cancer, to diabetes, we definitely have to take certain precautions. Your body is your shrine, right? Well, are you treating it that way, or would it make more sense to call it a waste dump?

The nutritional values of fast foods that we see advertised relentlessly are fairly low. Who am I kidding; they’re atrocious. The truth is that fast foods and nutritional values are only used in the same sentence when you’re hearing some spiel about how bad fast foods are.

That Big Mac or Whopper is not exactly going to build strong bones and muscles. The reality when it comes to eating right and acquiring the best nutritional values is plain and simple. You need plenty of water and vegetables. These are the essentials that so many of us are lacking. What do you drink on a daily basis? Are lattes and soft drinks zooming through your head?

These lack on the side of nutritional values. The caffeine does not do the body good. In fact, it pulls water off the muscles. This means you need to drink more water in order to catch up. Now, what kind of fuel are you running on? Things such as organic, fresh vegetables and fruits are wonderful for the human body. In addition with healthy meats such as chicken and fish, you’ll be well on your way to achieving those imperative nutritional values. Whether you would like to admit it or not, this aspect of living truly affects your appearance and life span.

Are you seeking out a better diet? Maybe you’re striving to get all those nutritional values from your daily meals. Well, the good news is that this information is so simple to come by now days. All you need is Internet access, and you can find out the nutritional values of any food you desire. Look them all up online and get the true scoop. You’ll also soon see how bad a lot of that quick convenient food actually is. See you on the next post.
