too slow too ambigious
While Jost is getting praise for his daring use of the long still shot, it lost its punch about 1/3 of the way through the film. The dialog is too clipped, the characters are helpless and pathetic. While not clarifying central plot questions can keep one thinking about a film, it does not work here. We are left with a series of images in the life and marriage of the main character. We are unable to know any of the story, but have to jump from image to image like paintings in a gallery. The juxtaposition of these central images with shots of the town, northwest landscape, and daily lives of some of the townsfolk is like trying to listen to someone speak in a loud room - you are not really sure what is being said. The slow pace and long still shots do afford plenty of time feed the cat, check on ebay auctions, or put out the recycle. I'm a little surprised I watched till the end.

lovely and well timed
While the dialogue drags a bit, the deliberate, measured pace of this film enhance the moodiness and the tragic message. It's visually stunning and the soundtrack by Erling Wold is breathtaking.

Great Film
This film blew me away, but I am a sucker for the excrutiatingly long shot. The best film I have seen in years.

my take on the movie
This was a fascinating film and in my opinion, the whole point of the srtuggle was caused by the rape of the forests by a normal man who did not realize his actions until it was too late.
Sure there are long, slow shots, but worth setting the tone. Music was also perfect.

FIVE STARS FOR THE FILM, ZERO STARS FOR THE DVD
This is definitely one of the greatest films ever made, arguably Jon Jost's best film to date. However, this DVD's treatment of the film is atrocious. I have 100s of DVDs and I am unusally forgiving about technical quality, especially when a company choses to release an excellent hardtosee film like THE BED YOU SLEEP IN. However, as a concerned consumer I feel compelled to say that, technically, this is the single worst DVD I own. The image constantly flutters, as though you're at the movies and there's something wrong with the projector gate. You'd do much better with the VHS tape. At least then you wouldn't suffer incessant picture jitter. I'd think twice before buying any DVD from Vanguard Films again.
